ben businovski - simulacraic wonderland (Thinner)

★★½☆☆
Dreamy and minimal in that typical Thinner style, this release is one that is pleasant to listen to, but that does not necessarily stands out in the crowd of the available music at Thinner. The music nicely grooves along, but it never stands out. Still, pleasant music to listen to or as background for doing your things.

Sounds like a summary of *all* Thinner music to me. Thinner has pretty much become a factory that churns out soulless formula crap like clockwork.

If you want to refresh your mind as to why minimal, dubby techno was actually a good idea, revisit some of the old Basic Channel / Chain Reaction releases. I did that the other day, as a matter of fact, and I was stunned: thanks to Thinner and their ilk I’d almost forgotten how fantastic this stuff can be if it’s done right (aka: done with talent and conviction).

ah yes, that’s definitely some great stuff. I must have some Basic Channel somewhere.

Thinner is not the only label. A lot of minimal on the netlabels is currently in a similar fashion. I was about to publish another review of a slightly better but still similar idea of pleasant but not too exceptional minimal.
