various artists - the 8 bits of christmas (8bitpeoples)

Monday, December 25th, 2006

An old release already but fitting to be reviewed today. I am a bit of a Scrooge I must say, I quite hate christmas. A big part of this is caused by the extremely bad music that surrounds these days. 8bitpeoples have done something to relief the pain, by making funny 8bit versions of your […]

the ascent - unsigned (Mixotic)

Monday, December 11th, 2006

One of the best DJ mixes I’ve heard ever, with an excellent choice of music (all unreleased according to the Mixotic playlist, which is unfortunate because I’d love to have these tracks individually as well) and well-done mixes. Great variation between banging techno tunes and dreamy electronica.

gastón arévalo - música para pecéras ep (Tropic)

Monday, November 6th, 2006

A more than interesting release by an artist I had not heard of before. A combination of ambient, minimal and electronica in a very organic way. Beautiful, detailed, soothing. Amazing stuff.

finnish pop sensation - the jilted (Kyoto republic)

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

For some reason, I associate a word like ‘jilted’ with darkness and harshness. The finnish pop sensation, however, is definitely not that. Quite the opposite. It’s a nice poppy electronica though, cheesy at times (vocoder vocals, anyone?) but still a nice listen.

lan formatique - amber eyes (Digilog)

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

4 tracks of very nice emotional electronica. Beautiful tingling sounds, nice melodies. The rhythms could’ve been slightly more complex here and there, but that should not stop people from listening.

take pills - 05.06.06 (Take Pills Die)

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Most of this is not my thing, but it may appeal to people who like things less polished. There’s too much chaos and “rough” material for my liking. Some interesting things in between.

various artists - outta breaks remixes (Al dente records)

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Variation to the max, these remixes of a track to me unknown are all ragga-based, but vary on the subject. Ranging from dubby reggae to laidback downtempo to breaks. Interesting release, though because it’s basically the same track 4 times, it can become a bit boring. Individual tracks are not bad though.

daniel maze - avatar (Rest.)

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Daniel Maze knows how to create very interesting music. That is my conclusion after listening to Avatar a few times. It’s not your convention ambient, but dubbing it experimental is also not the best description. It’s somewhere in between. Still quite accessible and very, very interesting, he combines a laidback feeling with a healthy dose […]
