various artists - ice mustard (Musictrade)

★★★½☆
A pretty OK compilation of ambient of the more experimental kind. Enough variation to be interesting, but consistent enough to offer a solid feeling of a good compilation. Interests me enough to download some of the individual artist’s albums.

d.soul - mad morning ep (Bump foot)

★★★★☆
Minimal as it is supposed to be: Minimal, atmospheric, very interesting, inducing a state of trance. Excellent choice of sounds, nice minimal rhythms. Four excellent tracks, with the title track standing out above the rest.

ocp - atmos (Serein)

★★★★½
Ambient soundscapes can be very boring when done wrong, especially because they drone on and on. Ocp knows this, realizes this, and so releases this album full of beautiful, accessible and not-too-long soundscapes. This is how it should be done. Ocp is also not too shy to use rhythmic elements (atmos two!) which enrich the atmosphere tenfold. Amazingly beautiful, stunningly detailed. One to keep listening.

jimm the dog - album (Bumpfoot)

★★½☆☆
An album of mixed quality, this album proves to me that Jimm the dog should spend more time on listening to his tracks before selecting them for a release. Of the three tracks, melodically Wonder is the best track, though the chosen sounds to represent the melodies are not that good. Highway and Potential both interest, but not enough to be really good.

focus & itrema - winter ep (al dente)

★★★½☆
Music for listening, but often with too little detail to stay interesting long enough. That is why it’s good that this release only counts two tracks. It is just a shame that the longest of the two, Champagne, is the least interesting. The soundscape of Meta polaire is much more interesting to listen to than the minimal beats and variations of Champagne. Still, worth one or two listens. But focus on Meta polaire!

s:e:m:a - am rande der wörter (Plusplus)

★★★☆☆
The concept of music combined with spoken word poetry is not a bad one. This release is not bad either, using this concept in a good way. The music, however, is a bit basic, bland, and is not able to really catch my interest. With more interesting music, I think this concept could be much more powerful.

fernando lagreca - colpi di sole (Autoplate)

★★★★½
Probably one of the most accessible releases I’ve heard so far from the Autoplate label, and one of the most amazing as well! Beautiful laidback music, melodic, great usage of vocals. Put this on and you’ll immediately loose all the stress you have. Stunningly beautiful.

the unireverse - first noizzle (No type)

★★☆☆☆
Their physical album Plays The Music was pretty OK. Now they bring this Christmas album. In their typical way of doing things differently, this electro experiment with a well-known melodies is a funny exercise. But even though as far as I can recognize only the first track is a real Christmas song, I prefer Plays The Music. The other two just don’t do it for me.

various artists - the 8 bits of christmas (8bitpeoples)

    ★★★☆☆
An old release already but fitting to be reviewed today. I am a bit of a Scrooge I must say, I quite hate christmas. A big part of this is caused by the extremely bad music that surrounds these days. 8bitpeoples have done something to relief the pain, by making funny 8bit versions of your favorite christmas music. Nicely done, just a shame that some of it’s still the same crappy christmas songs ;)
